Gamers, it seems that the legendary God of War franchise is getting ready for a monumental milestone – its 20th anniversary! Sony might be cooking something special in the gaming kitchen, possibly adding several classic God of War titles to PS Plus Premium. Recently uncovered key art in the PS2 classics catalog hints at a shift in how we could experience these nostalgic gems. Gone are the days when we could only juggle older titles through cloud streaming; this revelation suggests that native emulation could finally grant us freedom.

Nostalgia Awaits: What’s on the Horizon?

Since the franchise’s inception with the iconic 2005 PS2 title, God of War has been slaying sales figures, boasting over 4.6 million copies sold by 2012. Not to mention its successor, God of War 2, which released in 2007, achieving not only fame but also critical acclaim. Following its success, we saw multiple spin-offs on the PSP and PS3 platforms, including classics like God of War 3, Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, and Ascension.

Despite the love for these titles, PS5 players have faced a major hurdle – aside from the remastered version of God of War 3, these kickass games haven’t been natively playable. Talk about a sore spot for die-hard fans!

Cloud Streaming vs. Native Emulation: The Battle of Convenience

The whispers around the gaming community grew louder as rumors hinted at a potential remaster of the original God of War trilogy. However, the more realistic possibility lies in native emulation for the older titles on PS Plus Premium. An image of our hero, Kratos, recently emerged as the key art in the PS2 classics section, stirring the speculation pot. This could very well mean that classic entries are making a comeback, just in time for the 20th anniversary celebration in 2025.

As Sony is bolstering its efforts in the PS2 department for the PS4 and PS5, it seems logical that the beloved God of War series could be unchained from its cloud streaming status. Fans would love the option to revisit these nostalgic titles on modern consoles.

Players might also anticipate features such as trophies, rewind, save states, video filters, and improved rendering when classic God of War titles make their debut. However, God of War Ascension stands as the odd one out it currently only exists on the PS3. Without native PS3 emulation on the PS5 at this juncture, the fate of Ascension likely lies in the cloud, overshadowed by its more fortunate siblings.

The gaming world waits with bated breath for what’s next; will the classic titles rise from the ashes?
