Assassin’s Creed Mirage has had a bit of a bumpy road since its release on Steam. After dropping on October 12, 2023, the game saw a notably low peak player count compared to its predecessors. Ubisoft’s choice to delay the Steam launch may have impacted its player count negatively. Despite its presence on other PC stores prior to this, many gamers were left waiting, creating a sense of anticipation as fans were eager to jump back into the iconic franchise.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is viewed as a commendable throwback to the franchise’s roots, promising action, stealth, and an engaging narrative. Critics have responded positively, praising Ubisoft’s first return to classic gameplay after years of RPG-focused titles like Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla. However, this positive hype has not translated into player engagement on Steam, where the game peaked at a disappointing 6,381 players on its first Saturday. To put it into stark contrast, earlier entries saw peaks of 41,551 for Origins, 62,069 for Odyssey, and 15,679 for Valhalla.

Player Numbers and Market Expectations

As of now, the current player count for Assassin’s Creed Mirage stands at 3,691, which puts it on par with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, released back in 2018, which had 3,370 players. The fact that Mirage launched with a generous 50% discount, dropping the price to $24.99 until October 24, only makes these numbers more surprising as multiple incentives aimed at attracting players have failed to make a significant impact.

These initial numbers could be partly blamed on the game’s delayed arrival on Steam; however, there’s a promise of the future. Upcoming titles from Ubisoft, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will launch day one on Steam, which should enhance player engagement and allow future games to gain traction more quickly. The Assassin’s Creed franchise appears to be gearing up for a busy few years ahead, with rumors suggesting up to ten games set to release in the next five years a significant increase from the drought years of 2021 and 2022.
